I've titled my review as such because this is a book I have been writing in my head ever since I first heard Bob. That is, at a level of maturity where I could relate to what Bob was talking about. Or what I felt he was talking about. My own interpretation thereof. Isn't that what it's supposed to be about? I mean I used to imagine my self hanging out with all the characters in the songs from the LP's from '65-'66. The diplomat with the Siamese cat on his shoulder etc. you know just what I'm talking about.... Chris's book for me is something to cherish for even though I have my own memories and stories inside of me relating to when I first heard these records, it's always great to relate to other's experiences with the same records. I mean c'mon, that's what us music freaks do. And I'm grateful for that. It's one of the most important things for me. Music as community. Relating to fellow brothers and sisters over high art. This is also one of those books that I feel I can always go back to. Pick it up anywhere and just read and let my mind also wander as to what was I feeling or experiencing when that record came out. I've loved Chris's writing ever since I first read his reviews way back when in the local Los Angeles papers. Last year his Los Lobos book was one of the best music biographies I have ever read. I reviewed it here as well for those inclined to see why I thought it was a must read for anyone with even a passing interest in Los Angeles music and culture. I love this Dylan book. It's definitely one of my very favorites on the subject because it's so personal but I can relate to every chapter even if I disagree with Chris on some of these records. But that's the way it's supposed to be. Another great one Chris. Now do a book on The Blasters!! Chris Morris masters the balance between artist and listener in this personal account of Bob Dylan's LP catalog (right up to 2016's Fallen Angels). Bob Dylan's music has ranged from the profound to the indifferent and Morris sugarcoats none of it. He casts that same critical eye on his own life, which intersects with Dylan's musical output as many people's lives of a certain age inevitably did (and do).That Morris avoids self-indulgence in these brief but insightful chapters arranged around each Bob Dylan album illustrates the advantages of having a strong writer recollect in tranquility.
